The sharks, that is, the scam-meisters that prey upon naive, ambitious artists who are eager to be published. It’s often said, and pretty much undisputable, if you swim with sharks you’re bound to get bitten. But what are you supposed to do? Stay out of the water? We all know that the music business attracts all kinds. And that includes some of the slimiest excuses for human beings that one will ever encounter. Just like in football, in the music biz the key to having a good defense is to provide a strong offense. That means arming yourself with knowledge and strengthening the muscles of your business mind. You must work on your “plays” (so to speak), to ensure a strong “running game” that enables you to trample the sharks and other bottom feeders. Business savvy can take years.
